Hepatitis A Van Clinic

CBS3

The spike in Hepatitis A cases has been seen mainly among the homeless and people who use drugs. The liver infection is caused by fecal contamination.

“It’s from not washing your hands properly after you’ve used the bathroom or gone to the bathroom, not washing your hands properly and touching food items,” Dr. Steven Alles of Philadelphia’s Department of Health said.

While some cities with similar HAV concerns have taken on more serious sanitation efforts, an emphasis on vaccines is the route Philadelphia is currently taking. Those with health insurance can obtain the disease-preventing vaccine from their doctor, or the health department is holding a free vaccine pop-up at McPherson Square in Kensington on Tuesdays and Thursdays between July 30 and August 8 as an effort the combat the illness locally, per Billy Penn.

State Hepatitis A Outbreak

Doctor Steve Alles, director of the Division of Disease Control, said the numbers have been slowly climbing since 2017, and the city took a proactive stance in mid-2018.

“Starting last summer in July, Disease Control at the health department went out to the Kensington neighborhood, working with Prevention Point of Philadelphia, and we, onsite, in the encampments, on the streets, offered hepatitis A and flu vaccines to the homeless and drug-using people,” he said.

Preparing for Hepatitis A in Homeless Populations

“We’ve done a number of outreach and community mitigation strategies to try to protect these populations from introducing it here in Philadelphia in any significant way,” he said.

Alles said the health department tested 400 people at Kensington’s Prevention Point earlier this year. They found significant rates of Hepatitis B and C, but no Hepatitis A infections. The department returned to Prevention Point over the summer and vaccinated about 100 people against Hepatitis A, Alles said.
